The PlayStation 4 has a major system software update in the works, version 3.00, which the company is calling “Kenshin.”
Sony shared some of the new PlayStation features on its blog Tuesday. The new software update should offer a significantly increased storage capacity for PS Plus members, bumping it up from 1GB to 10GB. There will also be a usage meter to help you monitor how much storage you have left.
A new events hub will be added to provide an overview of upcoming activities in your favorite games, like a Double XP weekend or the appearance of a special enemy, and send a notification at the time of the event.
PS4 is becoming more social. The friends app will let you organize your friend list into groups so you can access certain people more efficiently. There will also be an option to create or join communities based on shared interests, like a favorite game or genre. Message boards in these communities add another way to join parties and games or organize a big multiplayer raid.
A Now Playing/What’s New feature shows you what your friends are doing so you can quickly join a game or party. You can also request a screen share or quickly jump to the PS store to buy whatever game your friend is playing. The new version also lets you send a request to a friend to watch his gameplay.
Kenshin will be more compatible with social media, allowing you to livestream gameplay on YouTube that’ll be available to watch online and on the YouTube Gaming mobile app and website. The new version will let you to share videos directly to Twitter as well. There will be a 10 second time limit, but you can cut longer videos.
Gamers who have been chosen to participate in the beta test will see these features in the near future, but it’s not guaranteed that all of them will make it to the final product.
