Earlier this week, The Times released its annual list of the 1,000 richest people in Great Britain. The list includes a few names that will be familiar to Americans—Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, for example—and many that are not.

The majority of Britain’s female billionaires either inherited their fortunes or acquired them through marriages—though there is one standout who made her own way. Here’s how the top ten richest women in the U.K. acquired their wealth:

THE HEIRESSES:

Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken (£9.15 billion; $13.26 billion)
Rank: #2

Upon the death of her father, Freddy Heineken in 2002, Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken inherited a 25% stake in the business founded by her grandfather, Heineken International.

Kirsten Rausing (£8.7 billion; $12.6 billion)
Rank: #3

Kirsten Rausing the granddaughter of Ruben Rausing, founder of Tetra Pak, the predecessor to the Swiss packaging behemoth Tetra Laval. She sits on the company’s board and owns one-third of its stock (the other two-thirds are owned by her brothers).

Baroness Howard de Walden (£3.63 billion; $5.22 billion)
Rank: #5

The baroness is the eldest of the four daughters of the late Lord Howard de Walden. The family controls 90 acres of land in central London, worth about £3.4 billion ($4.9 billion), according to The Times.

Marie-Chantal Miller (£1.58 billion; $2.29 billion)
Rank: #10

Marie-Chantal Miller is the princess of Denmark and the crown princess of Greece from her marriage to Pavlos, the son of former King Constantine II of Greece. Her fortune, however, comes from her father, Robert Miller, who made his billions from a duty-free shopping empire.

THE MARRIED WEALTH:

Kirsty Bertarelli (£9.78 billion; $14.17 billion)
Rank: #1

Kirsty Bertarelli is a singer and a former model, but owes the vast majority of her wealth to her husband, Ernesto Bertarelli. He is Switzerland’s richest man, thanks to inheriting Serono, the pharmaceuticals company founded by his grandfather.

Carrie Perrodo (£3.35 billion; $4.85 billion)
Rank: #6

Carrie Perrodo is the widow of the late Hubert Perrodo, who founded Perenco, which has become one of the world’s biggest family-owned oil companies.

Lady Tina Green (£3.22 billion; $4.66 billion)
Rank: #7

Lady Tina Green is married to fashion magnate Sir Philip Green, the chairman of the Arcadia Group, a retail giant that includes Topshop, Burton, and Miss Selfridge, among others.

Salma Hayek Pinault (£2.35 billion; $3.41 billion)
Rank: #8

While Hayek is best known for her acting—and indeed brings home a cool £12 million a year from her film work—she owes the majority of her wealth to her husband, Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault.

Harriet Heyman (£1.95 billion; $2.82 billion).
Rank: #9

Harriet Heyman’s husband is Michael Moritz, chairman of VC firm Sequoia Capital. Mortiz was an early investor in Google (GOOGL), PayPal (PYPL), and Yahoo (YHOO).

THE SELF-MADE

Denise Coates (£3.65 billion; $5.42 billion)
Rank: #4

Coates is Britain’s richest self-made woman, having turned her online gambling shop Bet365 into the world’s largest online gambling company. She currently owns just over half of the company, which brought in £1.5 in revenues last year.
