President Barack Obama nominated an attorney to the U.S. District Court bench who could potentially become the nation’s first Muslim federal judge.
Abid Riaz Qureshi is nominated for the district court in Washington, D.C., according to the White House.
“I am pleased to nominate Mr. Qureshi to serve on the United States District Court bench,” President Obama said in a statement. “I am confident he will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.”
Qureshi is a graduate of Harvard Law School and specializes in cases involving health care and securities fraud. He is also a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association’s Legal Ethics Committee, according to the White House.
