Steve Wozniak Bets on an Old Automaker For His Next Electric Car

Makers of electric vehicles and gas-electric hybrids have long enjoyed—and even relied on—early support and endorsements from celebrities to give their niche cars some mainstream street cred.

Larry David made the Toyota Prius cool. Leonardo DiCaprio was one of the first to own the all-electric Tesla Roadster. And late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert, along with other actors and business moguls, were early buyers of Tesla’s second vehicle, the Model S sedan.

Now Apple (AAPL) co-founder Steve Wozniak—also a Model S owner—is throwing his public support behind General Motor’s (GM) upcoming all-electric vehicle: the Chevrolet Bolt EV. And in the process, he may even ditch his Tesla.

Wozniak—or Woz, as he’s known—posted a photo on his verified Facebook account Wednesday, showing him standing next to a new Chevy Bolt EV with the caption “I expect to be switching cars soon!”—a not-so-subtle reference to his current electric vehicle, the Model S. It’s a notable endorsement, considering Tesla (TSLA) is developing the Model 3, a cheaper mass market vehicle that is expected to compete directly with the Chevy Bolt.

The Chevy Bolt EV is not yet available for sale, but a GM spokesperson said the company arranged for Woz to test the vehicle earlier this week. The car is supposed to go into volume production later this year.

The arrival of Tesla’s Model 3, which won’t be available until 2017, has been highly anticipated. Earlier this year, the company opened up reservations for the planned $35,000 car, and quickly racked up close to 400,000 reservations.

But the Woz isn’t so convinced. On his Facebook page, the entrepreneur went into detail as to why he’s picking the Chevy Bolt EV over the Tesla Model 3, saying GM’s new car hits the sweet spot.
