Apple Inc. Unveils Next Generation iPhone And New Watch

An Apple a Day is a weekly roundup of the biggest Apple news this week. To see last week’s roundup, click here.

It’s been a big week for Apple. After months of rumors and suspense, the tech giant finally held its press event this week to reveal a new iPhone, new Apple Watch models, and launch dates for its operating systems, including iOS 10.

But that wasn’t all that Apple (AAPL) faced this week. The company’s iPhone and Apple Watch preorders went off without a hitch, it faced a petition from critics who say its tax practices should be investigated, and much more.

Get Data Sheet, Fortune’s technology newsletter

In this week’s “An Apple a Day,” we’ll cover that and all the other big stories from this week’s Apple news. Read on to learn more:

  1. The biggest news of the week: Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The smartphones were unveiled at a press event on Wednesday and come with 4.7- and 5.5-inch screens in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models, respectively. In addition to design enhancements, a better camera, and a boosted processor, the iPhone 7 doesn’t come with the headphone jack, making it the first from Apple to eliminate the port. The iPhone 7 will launch on Sept. 16.
  2. Amazon didn’t make any friends in Cupertino on Wednesday after the company revealed the iPhone 7 before its launch. Just minutes before the event kicked off, Amazon (AMZN) launched an iPhone 7 cases marketplace, where users were able to see the new iPhone in all its glory. But Amazon wasn’t the only one: Apple’s Twitter (TWTR) account mistakenly tweeted an image of the iPhone 7 as CEO Tim Cook took the stage.
  3. Apple’s streaming-music service Apple Music is catching on: Apple’s Cook revealed that Apple Music now has 17 million paid subscribers, up two million subscribers since June, when Apple last announced subscriber numbers. Apple Music competes with Spotify and other streaming services designed to give users access to millions of tracks. Spotify has more than 30 million subscribers.
  4. As Apple works on booting orphaned apps from its App Store, the company revealed on Wednesday its App Store has reached an important milestone. The marketplace has now notched 140 billion downloads since its launch in 2008, and the total number of app downloads grew by more than 100% between July and August.
  5. Apple’s iPhone 7 announcement was preceded by some new Apple Watch models. Apple first announced the Apple Watch Series 2, which comes with a brighter display, built-in GPS tracking, and a faster processor. That was soon followed by the Apple Watch Nike+ (NKE), which comes with the sporting company’s activity-tracking software. Both wearables are designed for activity seekers and come with a hefty helping of wristbands. After the event, Apple quietly eliminated its gold Apple Watch Edition, which previously retailed for up to $17,000, depending on the model.
  6. After unveiling iOS 10, Apple’s latest mobile operating system, in June, the company has finally announced a release date. The mobile operating system will be available as a free download on September 13. It’ll be available to iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users, and come with an improved Apple Music and Apple Maps, as well as third-party app support for Apple’s virtual personal assistant Siri.
  7. If you’re interested in getting the Jet Black iPhone 7 version, be aware that it could be subject to damage. In fact, Apple acknowledged in a footnote on its iPhone page that the smartphone model could be subject to “micro-abrasions” after regular use. Micro-abrasions is a fancy term for scratches and other minor damage that will detract from its design as time goes on.
  8. In another footnote about the iPhone 7, Apple said that the iPhone 7, which has a water-resistance feature that will allow it to survive in up to a meter of water for up to 30 minutes without damage, won’t come with a warranty that covers liquid damage. Those who want coverage on liquid damage will need to pay the $129 fee for the AppleCare+ warranty extension plan.
  9. Apple’s tax troubles could eventually expand to the United States. Just days after the company was slapped by a $14.5 billion tax bill by the European Commission, nearly 50,000 people signed petitions this week requesting the U.S. Treasury Department investigate Apple’s tax practices. The petitions argue Apple has “stashed” its cash overseas and skirted what could be “an estimated $66 billion in U.S. taxes.” Apple has not yet responded to the petitions.
