Here’s your week in review, in haiku.

1.

Swift and senseless loss —
stop this triggering nightmare.
More thoughts and prayers.

2.

Puerto Ricans ask
for help and leadership, but
catch paper towels.

3.

Nobel peace prize goes
to a non-nuclear world.
North Korea talks.

4.

Men in power and
hotel rooms apologize,
but women see you.

5.

Petty breaks our hearts.
Remember that you belong
somewhere you feel free.

Love to Las Vegas, to Puerto Rico, and to all who are grieving and rebuilding this weekend.

On Point

How Nazis Made It to the MainstreamDocuments and emails acquired by BuzzFeed show how Breitbart ushered the term "alt-right," along with the movement's ideologies, into the national conversation. It's no secret that the publication, led by former White House chief strategist and now-returned editor Steve Bannon, has long amplified white supremacists. But the email chains uncovered by Buzzfeed reveal a "machine" designed to attract and air the grievances of a wide network of people.BuzzFeed News

Study Finds Discrimination by Government Officials
Proving discriminatory practices in hiring, admissions, or any other system is difficult since candidates from different backgrounds rarely possess identical skills and experience. But researchers from the University of Southampton in Britain and the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy conducted an experiment designed to uncover such instances, as practiced by U.S. government officials. By sending out emails with the same common questions to random local government employees, the authors found that responses differed depending on whether the senders had white- or black-sounding names. Emails with black-sounding names were 13% more likely to go unanswered and received 8% fewer polite responses.

Trump Administration Rolls Back Birth Control Coverage
The ruling rolls back the federal mandate requiring employers to cover birth control in their health plans. According to the Trump administration, the mandate could promote “risky sexual behavior” among some teenagers and young adults. This ruling is just the latest in a multi-pronged approach to roll back reproductive rights, which also includes a return to an abstinence-only curriculum from Betsy Devos's Department of Education.

Lin Manuel Miranda Assembles Stars for Puerto Rico
Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Camila Cabello, Gloria Estefan, Fat Joe, Luis Fonsi, John Leguizamo, Rita Moreno and other Latinx artists came together on an original track to benefit Puerto Rico. The song "Almost Like Praying" includes the names of all 78 municipalities on the island. All proceeds from the song, which Miranda put together in just 72 hours, will go to The Hispanic Federation's disaster relief fund.

A More Diverse Hollywood
Two years ago Charles D. King, the only black partner to ever work at William Morris Endeavor, left the talent agency to launch Macro, his own media company. The production house has found success for some of its early projects, including the Oscar-nominated "Fences." But Macro's long-term goal is more ambitious: diversify all of media. "When people look at all the ubiquitous screens that surround us, King wants us to see ourselves."

Remembering Those Lost in Las Vegas
The shooting at a country music festival in Los Vegas left at least 58 people dead, and nearly 500 people injured. The Los Angeles Times compiled profiles of  the victims who have been identified so far. From recent graduates to grandparents, each life has a story to tell.

Quote

I saw the truth. I saw and know that men could be beautiful and happy, without losing the capacity to live upon the earth. I will not, I cannot believe that evil is the normal condition of men… The one thing is — love thy neighbor as thyself — that is the one thing. That is all, nothing else is needed. You will instantly find how to live.
— Fyodor Dostoyevsky
