That’s a yet another reminder that while the U.S., now mulling booster shots, may have reached something of a (lackluster) saturation point—with 54% of its population fully vaccinated—many nations are still in the very early stages of vaccinating against COVID.

According to Our World in Data, which gathers information from local governments, 43.7% of the global population has gotten at least one COVID shot as of Sept. 22. For those living in low-income countries, the rate is just 2%. Around the world, 28.48 million vaccines are being distributed each day, down from the June 2021 peak of more than 40 million per day.

Nations that have made the most progress in fully vaccinating their populations include Portugal (84.2%), the United Arab Emirates (80.8%), Singapore and Spain (both at 77.2%), and Chile (73%). With 70.8% of its population fully vaccinated, China, the world’s most populous nation, is one of 15 countries to have a rate above 70%. Another 54 countries, including Turkey (50%), Sri Lanka (51.8%), and Ecuador (54.6%) have fully vaccinated more than half their populations. India, the second-most populous country and home to the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, is at 15%.

Fifty-nine countries, many of them in Africa, are below 10%. That group includes Ethiopia (0.5%), Egypt (4.6%), Vietnam (6.6%), and Bangladesh (9.1%).

The coronavirus—particularly the highly-contagious Delta variant—continues to be a devastating force around the globe. In total, more than 4.7 million people around the globe have died of COVID over the course of the pandemic.
