Hormel Foods, which owns the brand, has recalled over 9,000 cases of reduced fat Skippy, saying stainless steel fragments could have contaminated “a limited number of jars.” The fragments came from a piece of manufacturing equipment, the company said.

Four products are included in the recall:

• Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter, 40 oz. with “best if used by” dates of May 4, 2023, and May 5, 2023
• Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter—Club, 2/40 oz. with “best if used by” date of May 5, 2023
• Skippy Reduced Fat Chunky Peanut Butter, 16.3 oz. with “best if used by” dates of May 6, 2023, and May 7, 2023
• Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter Blended With Plant Protein, 14 oz. with a “best if used by” date of May 10, 2023

Customers with the affected products can return them to the point of purchase for a refund. To date, there have been no consumer complaints associated with the recall, the company says.

While the concept of metal in food sounds terrifying, it’s not entirely uncommon.

In March 2017, OK Food recalled over 933,000 pounds of breaded chicken products over metal contamination fears. Sanderson Farms recalled 500,000 pounds of meat for the same reason in 2015. And in 2018, Altria Group recalled some smokeless tobacco products after customers found metal objects in them.

Jimmy Dean Sausage and Tyson frozen chicken strips were also recalled after consumers said they found shavings in these products.
